BOOK LAUNCH and REVIEW: SMART PHONES DUMB PEOPLE?

SMART PHONES DUMB PEOPLE?

This one is authored by PARTHAJEET SARMA.

And if you are in Mumbai coming Saturday, you may catch up with the Book Launch, I am sure its gonna be fun.

MY MUSINGS…

In the last decade, technology has amazed us, enthralled us and ruled our lives. But who are ‘We’? The middle class and the rich class. Sadly, ‘We’ don’t make the population. The penetration to the roots has  just not been satisfactory. The basic hygiene and the amenities are still missing in the lives of millions. Do we really bother? Does technology bother? Each one of us loves flaunting our phones, ipads, tech -jazzy gadgets but rarely a few think about making a complex process, simpler by using any of the the innovations rightfully. We haven’t actually made the best use of the innovations and technology. We have not thought and used it meaningfully to solve the bigger problems of our society, except a few things. There is lots of scope and definitely miles to cover.   🙂 🙂

BOOK COVER: Simple and sophisticated.

TITLE: I quite liked it and it conveys a lot  It actually raises a rightful question– Are we dumb people and our phones are smarter?

BLURB: Talks sensible!! It catches attention if you are minutely related to problems of India and charmed by the technological innovations that the world is being taken over. It tries to connect the issues and the people who can solve them (innovators, entrepreneurs, socialists).

GENRE: Non-fiction

In ONE WORD: Insightful !!!

KEYWORD : Societal Improvement

REVIEW and ROUND-UP:  The book talks about how technology has made a space for itself in our lives. Our dependencies on gadgets have increased multi-fold and how we are not actually putting them to the right use except extracting fun, excitement and exposure. And despite of it all, there are big, odd numbers who still do not have access to clean drinking water. So the gap is huge and wide. He takes us through five chapters which are Innovation, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Priorities, Corruption.

Innovation, we know how it has been in India and whom do we associate with it. But apart from the IITian’s, many others are contributing  and making news. I absolutely agree with the Author when he says that Innovation is no more a choice, it is the only thing that matters. In fact , at every workplace, the selling point is Innovation. Next we need to analyse the rising needs and the adoption of technology to streamline processes. E-commerce is making waves, telecommunications has made the world a smaller place and now there is a need that we should be treading a path towards integrating technology in our daily chores to make our lives comfortable.

‘An entrepreneur is what you become when you are fired..’ — says the Author…  😉

The Priorities have to be identified by the educated and responsible class of people who are really working towards the improvement of the country and its processes.  We need to see why affording a house is still difficult for us? The base of the pyramid has to be carefully studied and attacked and worked on, not the tip. Lastly, he talks about corruption and we all know how it has impacted our development. Wish there was something that could really been done to eradicate it, we would all heave a sign of big relief. All in all, the book talks about generic and relevant issues and it holds significance in our present lives.

THUMPS UP:  The book is easy to digest and I would say that absolutely chew-able it is. There are many facts shared in the pages with are fresh and absolutely relevant. I liked the elaboration about three types of entrepreneurs, Innovation driven, Process Improvement and Need based. The emphasis on PAT (Process Alteration by Technology) has been strongly put up by the writer and very interestingly and convincingly. The book tells you interesting things and it does make you thoughtful at many instances. In fact, using technology to solve our nineteenth century problems in itself is a brilliant and compelling drive.

THUMPS DOWN and MORE: Quite much of it that’s been written is known to us, however it has been arranged in an order. The Author does give examples of his field, architecture that how they have been trying to innovate and solve core issues but I was looking for more solutions and practical approaches in other fields as well, to address the third world problems using the latest tools. No doubt good things have been talked about but there was need for more.

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST : Makes an easy, though-provoking and sensible read.
