This anecdote comes from the romantic pages of my dairy.

To start off, M and I had hit off as great friends six years back before he had mentioned marriage to me on one dreamy day.  I was crazy about him but very honestly I voiced it to him, it would be my parents who would decide first.

Touch wood! Dad was a liberal one but Mum could really be very fussy about minute detailing of people and things. A future son-in-law was sure to go through detailed scrutiny.

As boys-will-be-boys M enjoyed experimenting with his hairstyle and his facial hair. While he thought sometimes soft grow, sometimes heavy stubble made him look attractive though I often remarked, ‘I hate that unclean stubble of yours.’ In fact I called him Patchy, Scruffy and Hairy to tease and instigate him to get rid of them, however all in vain.

M with Stubble

One day, Mom landed up at my place surprisingly before my birthday. Before anything, the day turned into a cleaning day. She termed me as the most lazy bum and broomed, mopped, arranged my room till it shined..Oh Yes! Now you know, my Mum has an undying fetish for neatness and hygiene.

The day to reckon arrived, Mum and M were supposed to meet. I prepared and warned M for the evening. But the biggest question was would M shave off his stubble to give a clean look to his future Mom- in- law?  …..

M acted a sweetheart. I was bowled over by his well groomed look that night. The ugly hair was gone to reveal his sharp facial features. Mom was impressed. He looked Handsome and Ultra-clean. The neat look had done its magic. The rejection was saved totally.
