Winning Post – Things You Wish Your Office Did For You

Yay! Won the LABOUR DAY BLOGGING contest at Sulekha Rivr

My Winning Post is here: I created an imaginative office where I have demanded all my comforts.  😉 🙂

TOPIC:   Things You Wish Your Office Did for you!!!

On an average day, working people spend 8-9 hours in their office and the workaholics beyond that. So for the working class, five or six days of the week as per their office policies, are dedicated to the workplace. Thus, we all agree to this that a crucial portion of a day is expended at our offices; hence they should be the best, nothing less than homes. I believe the workplace should be a place which we should look forward to cheerfully. Obviously it gives us the pay-packets but it should give attractive reasons as well. For me, it should be a place where our problems should come to an end and not be a place where they would multiply, unlike today’s scenario. There should be a mandate for all the workplaces to ensure more than the average office facilities for all its employees. The hiring companies fear that if they provide much to their employees, they may lose on the productivity but I beg to differ with them. In my opinion, giving the home-like atmosphere and comfort zones in the office would definitely bring out the best in the employees.

Office should be fun, stimulating and imaginative. It should be providing its employees with the best of facilities. I want to let my imaginations fly to create an office of my dreams and make it a productivity boosting one. There are some great working grounds like Google but then we all have our different domains and there are rarely a few like Google. I work in the telecom domain with a company that is a leader in its space and its spread across the globe but I feel they lack in doing much for their Indian employees. Cheap labor in India has really made us compromise on many aspects and the work-life balance has gone for a toss. After all, it’s the employees that make for the growth for the company and not likewise. We, the people definitely deserve the best!!!

My ‘having it all’ wish list is below…

I want my office to treat me like an employee and not a bonded labor; quite often some people of the office forget that we are humans. The office life becomes a dreadful experience because of them.

I wish my workplace gave me enough flexibility in making transitions from one domain to another.

I wish the office HR policies ensured mandate leaves on my birthday/ anniversary/emergency/ other days of importance because every employee needs them and wishes to be with his/her family. I say this because though we have CL, EL and other kinds of leaves but they are denied quite many times.

How I wish if my office organized some great events like make-over days, organized spa, theme parties and rock-band shows once in a while.

It would be interesting if the office gave me a state-of-the-art, modern, architectural, fashionably designed cubicle. I would love to have a space for myself, impressive to the core. I am sure it will boost up my performance.

How I wish if it adopted the new design-technology of height adjustable desks. Many a times, I get tired of sitting all day at my seat and standing or elevated postures seem comforting. It would be an ideal solution at the touch of a button.

Foot-rests and arm rests should definitely be provided. The foot rest often goes missing despite the fact that it is very important to support the back and the lower part of the body.

The working zone in the office should be spaced out with more casual areas and break-away spaces like juice bars, lounging areas and activity corners to relax and rejuvenate. They would ensure proper social recreational interactions among employees.

Home-like amenities has always been on my mind and most of the offices lack on that. I would definitely want them to be included in the office designs. Sometimes during emergencies when people have to stay, there should be beds, kitchen etc. to facilitate the over-night stays.

There should be high sound resistant walls because background noises and employees interactions can cause lot of interference.

I ask for more also, the remote delivery concept to be adopted by my office. I wish it gave the facility of working from home at least twice in a week. That would add office-home balance in my life and cut down the stress effectively.

I wish if the office provided for some shopping centersgrocery stores, health centers, gyms and restaurants within its premises helping us avail the facilities at subsidized rates and making our life simpler.

I wish my office was fun enough to allow You-tube (cricket and movies) viewing at work. It could organize group sessions for the team once in a while.

I would also love to have a large library where we could read books, beat the stress and take a break.

I want the learning department of the office to genuinely look into our talent growth, I mean I wish there was more of learning and exchange of information than work pressure and timelines of deliveries. That would pull us out of a rut. I want an innovative environment at my workplace where I would be paid to explore, experiment and enjoy.

I wish the workplace had accommodating and sensitive policies with respect to our kids, like if they provided for a crèche for the children, female employees and even the males would be grateful.

The office should definitely give us salary increments twice in a year…. I know none is gonna agree on this.

And the office should give a holiday on International Labors Day because mine doesn’t. They want to emphasize on this that they do not treat us like labors but they do sometimes.

The human wants are endless and so are mine, but for the time being I would be fine with the above if there are met. And I am still managing without it so definitely it is providing me a platform to perform and vent out my creative pangs.

Until then, Happy Slogging!!!

  1. I am afraid if I was in an office with all the features you have mentioned, my productivity will crash. I will probably spend all my time rolling from one activity to the next. And during my down time, you will find me asleep from all the exhaustion!
    😀
Jokes apart, congrats on the prize!

  2. Wow! 🙂
