As I look back through the pictures of Spain, I am choked with prepossessing memories. Exactly, an year ago, I was basking under the Spanish sun (4th to 10th October 2019) and if I had to define the entire experience in one word, I would call it ‘Indelible.’ It was my first trip to Valencia and Ibiza and I was head over heels in love with both the places for different reasons. While Ibiza wooed me with its picturesque natural beauty, Valencia impressed me with its futuristic architecture and its special parade that takes place on the 9th of October. What is so special about October 9th?
It is a public holiday. Colloquially, ‘Nou d’Octubre’, this red letter day is synonymous to vibrant parade and fiesta. It is the day when history comes alive on the streets of Valencia. The Valencian Community celebrates it as their day of victory which was attained after 500 years of Moorish rule. On October 9, 1238, James I of Aragon captured and created the Kingdom of Valencia. Thereafter, he ruled over it independently until Valencia became part of the Kingdom of Spain in 1707.
Every year, history is perfectly staged and celebrated with zest. The locals wear medieval costumes and walk along a designated route, all around the city, in nearby towns and villages. One also gets to notice the Valencia’s flag of autonomous community when it is also displayed with the national flag of Spain and the European flag.
Last year, I not only captured the fun and fervor of the day with my lenses but also relish the importance of the day. It was a great opportunity to attend the parade as well as cheer alongside the locals. What a sight it was to see participants dressed up in gorgeous medieval costumes and meeting over communal meals and parties. It felt like the whole city was out on the streets. This year in 2020, the event is not taking place in lieu social distancing protocals but I am sure it will be back with a bang, next year.
