Christmas Wish: A plate of food for all

A starving child is a frightful sight!

Nearly 900 million people out of 7 billion people in the world suffer from hunger. Amidst our busy lives, when we stop to read such numbers, I am sure it does affect us in some way or the other. We are growing at a massive rate but whats more worrisome is that we are growing into a hungry world. Sometimes I wonder what do the advancements in technology, testing of nuclear missiles or putting satellites in planets trajectory hold for mankind when there isn’t enough food for its dying species.

Globally, we often hear of complex terminologies like food inflation, shortage of food, farmers debts, inorganic farming and worse starvation deaths.  The policy makers set goals, launch schemes, we donate too but the child who dies of hunger knows nothing except that there was no food to help him/ her survive. The truth of life is too simple and it ends in death.

When we experience them, we know how badly they hurt- the hunger pangs.

I live in Delhi which is famous for its gastronomical delights. I don’t think any Delhi-ite would shy away from being called a foodie because we simply love food. So for the rich and privileged, one can spot lots of food, posh eateries in every nook and corner of the city but at the same time poor children, men and women can be seen begging for money and food at every other street light or market in the city. The imbalance is painful. There is too much for a small section and there isn’t anything for a large chunk. We can do our bit by ensuring that atleast one person gets to eat because of us. If not much atleast we can teach our children not to waste food at home.

A great thought indeed!

Poverty and hunger deprives children from education too. A poor wager who earns a meager livelihood prefers his son or daughter to join him rather than send them to school because it is difficult for him to arrange two meals a day for all of them. For him a working hand is any day a better option. But this way the child is missing something so essential-Education. However, Akshaya Patra Foundation has a resolution to not let the children compromise on education due to hunger. Its mid day meal programme is a wonderful initiative that serves millions of children in schools by providing them food. Thus the children get food if they come for studying.

Play a game for a social cause

PLAY the GAME for a CAUSE

In the age of gaming, when every now and then a friend sends a new request to increase their number of lives in the virtual world, here comes a game that pictures something from the real world– need for proper food.

This game gives you a feel that how the kitchens at Akshaya Patra operate. Through the game it helps us to understand the monitoring of quality as well the quantity of food that is delivered to the children. This way we learn that how important it is to ensure that children receive their lunch in time. The main aim of the game is to make us realize the importance of mid day meal for the children.

Its a very simple game. The gamer has to keep an eye on the thalis to ensure that no specific food item is missing. Lets play and share with our friends and children. This Christmas let us all wish for the day when no child would sleep hungry.
